Ideal announces new SD-WAN security stack

3 April 2019

Ideal, the Brighton-based managed services provider, today announces a new advanced Software-Defined WAN security stack with capabilities that solve critical edge security challenges, at the same time as enabling digital transformation. By 2020, 80% of organisations will primarily use public cloud and there’ll be 10 billion mobile-connected devices1. The latest Cisco SD-WAN offering from Ideal ensures businesses can embrace SD-WAN at pace, without compromising on security.

As branches open up to direct cloud connections and run business-critical applications over the internet, securing the Cloud Edge (the intersection of the network, cloud, and security) becomes critical. Historically, the way of dealing with security at the cloud edge is to send all traffic back to the corporate data centre which requires costly MPLS and can be complex and slow. The new Ideal SD-WAN solution provides a complete shield at the edge with centralised control of both network and security management.

Richard Harvey, Solutions Architect – Enterprise Networks, commented: “Since we launched SD-WAN we’ve seen a huge amount of interest particularly from businesses who pursue a cloud-first strategy for application delivery. Today, over 50% of traffic is in the cloud2, yet most networks are not cloud aware. Businesses need to be able to use cloud services with confidence, and with our SD-WAN solution, you can securely connect any user, any application, anywhere with any cloud.”

For most enterprises, the complexity of managing network and security operations is resulting in increased breaches worldwide as many ransomware attacks piggyback on internet connections and open ports used by SaaS and cloud applications. Ideal’s SD-WAN solution, built on Cisco’s Digital Network Architecture (DNA), offers consistent unified threat protection and multi-layer security including:

  • application-aware firewall in the branch router
  • end-to-end micro-segmentation, encryption and security zoning
  • leveraging DNS security layer, intrusion detection and prevention.

“Many companies today take a security-first approach, and so do we,” commented Mick McLean, Solutions Director. “Security is deeply rooted into every software defined wide area network. Plus, we work with a highly sophisticated threat-intelligence partner at Cisco to guard the entire connected enterprise against debilitating attacks.”
