Let's talk

Meet... Chris Gatenby

19 July 2017

Chris joins us to further strengthen the UC team. Find out what he does, what he likes, and what he’s looking forward to.

Welcome to Ideal! What's your new job title?

Senior Network Engineer.

What will you be doing day to day?

Working on new and existing projects on voice platforms, building relationships with customers and colleagues, and hopefully taking away some of the workload from Max.

What attracted you to Ideal?

I have worked in the industry for over 20 years and seen company values such as “exceeding customer expectations” before. The Ideal history captured me, though: for someone to recognise what was being missed and what could be achieved, then start-up a company and deliver on those values - and continually grow. That was a company that I wanted to be a part of.

What are you most looking forward to?

Many things, from a technical viewpoint being involved from the start to the end of the project and providing the customer with a solution that best suits their requirements. The opportunity to become an integral member of a successful team and company, and establishing trusted relationships with our customers. And of course the occasional Kronenbourg 1664 at 17:00 on the Friday :)

Tell us about your career in 100 words or less

I started working at 15. Various roles: Co-op, Pizza Hut, Ladbrokes and a rare stint as a sheet metal roofer - but once you realise you are no good with heights, a career change is needed urgently. In 1993 I started a six-month contract at Ericsson, and left 20 years later. Leaving was a difficult decision as I had established many great relationships with colleagues and customers but the opportunity with Ideal was something that I did not want to look back on and regret not taking. Now I'm here, and looking forward to this new chapter!

What will be your biggest challenge(s)?

My biggest critic is myself, and I'm already recognising the highly skilled and talented teams within Ideal. The desire to continually improve, know and understand the people, process and platforms will be my top priority. There are also the Cisco accreditations to achieve!

In five years, what do you hope to have achieved?

To be a key member of Ideal, and integral in the growth of the company.

What do you do outside work?

Now that my children are getting older, kids clubs, activities and Mum and Dad’s taxi service have all slowed down. So, the golf clubs are cleaned off and I try to lower my 20 handicap at Pyecombe Golf Club at the weekends. Other sporting activities have been replaced with visits to beer gardens with the family and friends. My evenings consist of running a book on what time my 18-year-old son will get in, convincing my 16-year-old daughter that a nun’s habit suits her and that she should consider it as a career, and trying to get my wife to agree that all sports are worth watching.

I am also now trying out Frappuccinos as my youngest enjoys going into town with his friends and drinking them whilst conversing at Costa. I’m not sure what I was doing at 12 years old, but he is now called Niles (after Niles Crane from Frasier).
