Let's talk

Meet... James Leishman

21 October 2016

James is one of our newest starters. Find out what he does, what he likes, and what he's looking forward to.

Welcome to Ideal! What's your new job title?

I am a network engineer.

What will you be doing day to day?

I will be providing first-line support, supporting the team to deal with incidents quickly, professionally and as efficiently as possible. My role includes the support of customer WAN, LAN, voice systems and firewalls, and dealing with any customer changes which have been requested.

Tell us about your career in 100 words or less

I have been working in IT for five years, since I was 17. I started with an apprenticeship at Scotia Instrumentation dealing with first and second-line IT support, and on completion became acting co-ordinator for the company. I left to achieve a first-class Bachelors with Honours in Network Management and Design, during which I worked with RigNet providing third-line network support for offshore oil rigs and maritime vessels. I designed, implemented and troubleshooted network infrastructures using predominately Cisco devices using technologies like Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA), multiprotocol label switching, very small aperture terminal (VSAT), IP telephony, wireless and VPNs.

What attracted you to Ideal?

I was looking for long-term employment and to expand my knowledge, and Ideal seems like a growing and approachable company.

What are you most looking forward to?

Continuing my career in networking, achieving additional accreditations and strengthening my current knowledge.

What will be your biggest challenge(s)?

I was out of work for six months while I completed my Bachelors with Honours, so I am a little rusty with Cisco ASA configurations. Palo Alto Networks' technology is also relatively new to me, but I'm sure I'll be OK with it over the next few months.

In five years, what do you hope to have achieved?

I hope to reach Cisco-Certified Network Professional or higher in routing and switching, and Cisco-Certified Network Associate in security and/or wireless networking - possibly also with a Palo Alto Networks accreditation. Ideally Cisco-Certified Internetwork Expert would be my goal - five years is a long time, so that’s the plan!

What do you do outside work?

I like the gym and exploring the new city I guess - I moved to Brighton from Aberdeen for this job. The team and staff here have been very social, and invited me out to numerous events.

Recommend a film, TV show or book

Book – The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out of The Window and Disappeared (spoilers).
