Meet... Ronan McDonald

9 October 2017

Ronan's our most recent starter. We caught up with him to ask about him, his new job, and what he's looking forward to.

Welcome to Ideal! What's your new job title?

I’m a project manager in the project management office (PMO).

What will you be doing day to day?

I’ve been here a month now and my routine is something like this: we start the PMO day with the resourcing meeting at 9.30 (although I start gathering the inputs for the meeting at 8.30), and then when we've finished we carry out the tasks that need to be completed as a result of what’s been agreed in the meeting. After that, we start work on the various projects and engagements that we’re working on with customers – so far I’ve been involved with OneFamily, and major brands in the fashion, restaurant and construction verticals.

What attracted you to Ideal?

Ideal appealed to me because it presented an opportunity to work with a progressive and successful company, and what looked like a great team. I’ve also been commuting to London for the last 10 years so it’s great to swap that for a 15-minute bike ride!

What are you most looking forward to?

Working on new projects with customers that are new to me.

Tell us about your career in 100 words or less

My career has mainly been focused on servers and storage in the data centre. I’ve worked on interesting storage products with companies like Next and BASF, and most recently before I joined Ideal I was working on two largish Nutanix deployments, one for Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and one in London for Reliance Bank (the banking arm of The Salvation Army). Ideal's often working on major data centre and storage projects, so I hope my experience will be useful.

What will be your biggest challenge(s)?

At the moment, remembering everybody’s names!

In five years, what do you hope to have achieved?

I don’t like to plan too far ahead but if I have earned and retained the respect of those around me in that time, then I’ll be happy.

What do you do outside work?

Our two kids are at university so during the term times my wife and I are keen movie-goers, mainly to the Duke of York’s and Duke's at Komedia cinemas in Brighton. I’m sure the fact that you can bring drinks in is the main reason we like it, though!

Recommend a film, TV show, game or book

I was going to recommend On The Road but I expect someone else might have chosen that. The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe is a good follow up, as it picks up the real life story of some of the characters fictionalised in On the Road, some 10 years later. I’m also looking forward to seeing the new Blade Runner movie in the next couple of weeks, as the original film is one of my all-time favourites.
