About Battersea Power Station - Skanska

Without doubt one of London’s iconic landmarks, Battersea Power Station had stood empty and unloved for many decades before being redeveloped to create a new urban village.

Skanska, one of the UK’s leading contractors, was awarded the £88.6m contract to deliver the mechanical and electrical shell, core and fit-out works for Phase 1, supporting 864 apartments, shops, offices, and restaurants. Ideal were awarded to deliver the converged network system.

The Challenge

Skanska needed a proven technology partner to develop and deploy the network.

Core requirements included a stable and resilient network offering significant bandwidths for homes, shops and offices and flexibility to cater for future growth in usage.

Phase 1 had aggressive critical dates and tight financial boundaries. At the same time, Skanska were keen to limit the number of workers on site to keep the working environment as safe and efficient as possible.

The Solution

Ideal took a proactive approach, proposing a highly-intelligent 10G network infrastructure instead of the 1G originally requested in the specification.

The solution provides Wi-Fi for residents, workers and the public, extending as far as the waterfront jetty for private events. And robust security, including advanced user authentication and monitoring.

The network also provides control of building management systems (BMS) including lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, CCTV, door access control – and even intelligent water fountains.

The solution was designed and built at Ideals’ headquarters. It was then tested with all the relevant operational technology IP partners, prior to on-site installation at Battersea, ensuring smooth implementation. This also helped to keep the site as safe as possible.

“Ideal have a strong ability to execute and manage complicated projects and have been a trusted technology partner in the success of Phase 1.”

Stuart Bailey, Senior Technical Manager, Skanska said: “Right from bid stage it was obvious Ideal had the relevant construction network experience. They really understood the pressure facing contractors and showed support right from tender to practical completion.”

Ideal also provide a 24/7 managed service from the UK Customer Service Centre, with multi-disciplined engineers on-hand to provide a rapid response and proactive support with ITIL-aligned processes.
